Substance Series statement:

For thousands of years plants have been used for their healing properties throughout the world. Many edible and medicinal plants, including various species of Eucalyptus, were used by Quandamooka people on North Stradbroke Island as food and for treatments of various conditions and illnesses. This series includes images of just a few of these species recognised for their medicinal qualities. For example essential oil of Eucalyptus tereticornis (blue gum) has shown to possess therapeutic, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties; Corymbia gummifera (bloodwood), besides its other healing qualities, is a bactericide, and Eucalyptus resinifera (red mahogany) is antiviral.

These works were created by experimental photographic process the ‘biochrome’. This process is based on fusion of organic and photographic materials subject to decomposition under specific conditions, tracing natural processes in this art-science endeavor. The works result from micro organic activities during decay; present the plants’ characteristics in a unique way, celebrating their healing, cultural and visual qualities and highlighting their significance in the cycle of life.
